Self-Portrait, Paris
Autoritratto, Parigi

André Kertész had a powerful sense of self, which he expressed in many self-portraits. He began taking them while still a teenager and continued making images of himself over seventy years. Kertész has said that all of his photographs are self-portraits, which is indirectly true not just of him but of all poet-photographers. For these special individuals, each photograph is a reflection of their consciousness. We see here a perfectly recognizable profile as a shadow on the wall. We also see the geometric outline of his tripod-mounted camera, which was designed to expose glass plates measuring four-and-a-half by six centimeters.
